HP is a great company when it comes to Linux support. I love that I can go out and buy a lowend wireless laser printer and it works perfectly with my Linux desktop. HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP) is their software for managing their devices and it’s pretty easy to use.

I did notice that when connected to a VPN I can’t print to it, but nothing’s perfect.

When I went to manage using the HPLIP interface, I ran into a problem. In order to start (or stop) the printer, set it as the default, etc., I had to belong to the lp and sys groups. So go into YaST > User and Group Management, double-click your account, check the lp and sys groups and then ‘Finish’.

I logged out and back in but there’s no doubt a smoother way to handle it.
