Codeweavers announced a version of the Wine Project called Crossover Office that allows Office 97, Office 2000, and Lotus Notes to run in Linux today. Initial pricing will apparently be $54.95 per license. Although that adds up, it doesn’t add up as much as Windows licenses. Reviewers said that despite a couple bugs in a beta release, they were able to get everything running, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and even Internet Explorer. The testers pointed out that even though this is now possible, Microsoft Office still costs a couple hundred dollars, so their recommendation is that if you already have Office and want to use it, this may be just for you. If you don’t own Office, use StarOffice or OpenOffice and save yourself some money.
